Theme Program

The act of putting pen to paper encourages pause for thought, this in turn makes us think more deeply about life, which helps us regain our equilibrium  ~   Norbet Platt

The Theme Writing Program is a supplementary course that is offered in addition to ELA in grades 6-8.  It focuses specifically on developing students’ writing skills.  The goal of this program is to empower students by giving them time and opportunities to write, thus building their confidence and enabling them to be highly equipped for the writing they will complete in their continuing education and future careers.

Over the course of their time in the program, students will explore various genres of writing, with particular focus on persuasive, informational, and narrative writing.  Students are guided through the stages of the writing process for each writing piece, and learn about writing through both direct instruction and individualized feedback on each writing piece.

There are many authentic opportunities for students to share their writing with a larger audience.  Students have published books, produced short videos, and created PowerPoints and PhotoStories that showcase their writing, and have consistently been honored in the Canisius College Western New York Writing Anthology as well as the Buffalo Holocaust Research Center’s Writing Contest.

The Theme Writing Program has been a part of the curriculum at St. Andrew’s Country Day School for more than 35 years and continues to evolve to meet the changing CORE curriculum standards as well as new developments in technology.
